Hacking ethical tools inviting ethical reflection in living labs

TIME

DESCRIPTION

There is a proliferation of ethics tools for technological innovations. While these are all created with the best intentions, there seems to be a focus on production instead of meaningful consumption.

In this workshop we empower participants to hack their (urban) Living Lab methods by discovering how different methods can stimulate engaging ethical reflections and use them in a way that benefits their Living Lab projects. We want to hack Living Lab methods and participatory ethical or legal assessments because the ethics of datafied environments have received renewed attention with the advent of artificial intelligence.

In this workshop, we will increase the tool literacy of our participants, as we share best practices of tools and methods to explain what works.

Participants learn what the added value of each of the discussed tools or methods is and get insight into the opportunities of the various probes used in these tools and methods. After the session, participants can independently improve tools and methods they want to use by adding new probes or modifying the existing probes.

In this workshop, Living Lab researchers and organizers learn more about tools and methods to stimulate ethical reflection. This is valuable because tools can facilitate reflection with a broad audience on the ethical opportunities and challenges in urban environments: (e.g., which data can be collected and analyzed, how do they want to be informed about this, how to operationalize SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals)).

In this way, participants can consider the ethical boundaries and wishes of the target group(s) and the intended target group(s) can help determine the way in which technology is developed in the Living Labs process. Participants will also improve their ethical tool literacy by learning about best practices in other urban Living Lab settings.

They will be able to improve other tools and methods being used in Living Labs trajectories in the future.
