Call for Papers at OpenLivingLab Days 2023

Accepted contributions will be presented at the Open Living Lab Days Barcelona 21 to 23 September*.

**Accepted contributions will be published in the Conference Proceedings of Open Living Lab Days 2023 with an ISBN number. By submitting your paper, you are hereby authorizing ENoLL to publish your paper in the Open Living Lab Days 2023 Conference Proceedings which will be part of the Research Track of Open Living Lab Days. The selected top papers will be invited to submit their contribution to the Special Issue of the Journal of Innovation Management on “Living Labs and Collaborative Innovation”.

The European Network of Living Labs invites you to send a contribution to work on the theme of: 

LIVING LABS FOR AN ERA OF TRANSITIONS: 
How human-centric innovation is changing our lives 

If you have a great case study, a piece of research or ongoing project you want to share with the Living Lab community, then we encourage you to submit a paper or proposal for an innovation presentation to the conference.  

As a practitioner, a researcher, a student, a member of a public authority, you can share your experience with the largest community of Living Labs, so do not hesitate to take part.  

You can submit papers in 3 different categories to encourage a diverse participation of actors:

The call encourages contributions related to the following topics:

Green Transition

This track focuses on how living labs can contribute to the transition towards a more sustainable and environmentally friendly society. It will explore how living labs can help to develop, test and implement innovative solutions for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and pollution of air, water and soil, promoting circular economy, improving energy efficiency and conservation, and preserving biodiversity.   

The submissions are encouraged, but not limited to the following topics:  

  • Living Labs addressing climate change & enhancing urban city resilience 
  • Living Labs for sustainable urban mobility and city logistics
  • Living Labs for decarbonization and sustainable development 
  • Living Labs for digital sustainability, (including zero pollution) 
  • Living Labs & New European Bauhaus: beautiful | sustainable | together
  • Living Labs & Circular economy 
  • Living Labs for innovative business models for sustainable products & services 
  • Water management and the improvement of water quality via Living Labs

Digital Transition

This track focuses on how living labs can support the digital transformation of society by experimenting and testing innovative technologies and services, and by involving citizens and stakeholders in the co-creation process. It will explore how living labs can help to design and implement solutions that leverage digital technologies to enhance the quality of life, increase efficiency, support Public Administrations, and foster economic growth.  

The submissions are encouraged, but not limited to the following topics:  

  • Living Labs for Digital transition and digital transformation 
  • Emerging technologies in technology-based Living Labs: Cloud Computing, IoT, Blockchain, 5G, 6G, Extended reality, Virtual and Augmented Reality 
  • Living Labs for (Social impact of) AI 
  • Digital Twins and Living Labs 
  • Open Data and Data sharing through Living Labs 
  • Digital Innovation hubs 
  • The ethic dimension of digital transformation via Living Labs 
  • Co-creating digital solutions for the future in Living Labs 

Social Transition

This track focuses on how living labs can contribute to the social transformation of society by experimenting and testing innovative social and cultural practices, services, and products, and by involving citizens and stakeholders in the co-creation process. It will explore how living labs can help to design and implement solutions that address social challenges such as social exclusion, inequality, and marginalisation –Research track sponsored by SHIFT-HUB.

The submissions are encouraged, but not limited to the following topics:  

  • Strategies and methodologies involving citizens and other stakeholders (via Living Labs) in the design of Smart Cities & Regions 
  • Urban Living Labs and smart cities to address urban challenges 
  • Citizen Science in Living Labs 
  • Replicability and scalability of Open and Social Innovation initiatives at a wider scale 
  • Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) (including ethical aspects of living lab & citizen engagement activities 
  • Co-creation and Innovation in Health & Well-being Living Labs 
  • Health & Well Being Living labs as Research infrastructures 
  • Tourism innovation and Living Labs 

Just Transition

This track focuses on how living labs can contribute to a fair and equitable transition toward a sustainable and digital society, by ensuring that no one is left behind. It will explore how living labs can help to design and implement solutions that promote social justice, gender equality, human rights, and inclusiveness, and that foster a participatory and democratic approach to innovation. 

The submissions are encouraged, but not limited to the following topics: 

  • Living labs for and with socially vulnerable groups 
  • Living Labs for conflict resolution 
  • Living Labs for education and vocational training 
  • Gendered innovation and Living Labs 
  • Sustainable development methods for Culture & Creativity at city, regional and international level 
  • Living Labs and Migrants, human rights and equality 
  • Gender Equity through Living Lab approaches 

Living Lab Transition: Methodologies and Impact

This track focuses on the methodologies, tools, and evaluation frameworks used in living labs, and on their impact on society and innovation. It will explore how living labs can be designed and implemented to maximize their impact on society, by fostering collaboration, creativity, and learning, and by promoting ethical and responsible innovation. It will also discuss how living labs can contribute to the development of a new paradigm of innovation that is more human-centered, democratic, and sustainable.  

The submissions are encouraged, but not limited to the following topics: 

  • Methodologies for evaluating the impact of social innovations on citizens and other stakeholders 
  • Open Innovation methods and tools to improve the Living Lab scientific community 
  • Organizational dynamic capabilities of Living Lab actors (learning capability, innovation and development capability, etc.) 
  • Individual competencies of all the actors involved in living lab activities 
  • Integrating learning theories to LL theories/frameworks 
  • Impact evaluation of Living Labs (Integration of quantitative and qualitative methods to tackle the issue of evidence based Living Lab services, including Ethical codes of conduct: how to implement and evaluate it?) 
  • How to ensure shared meaning creation and increase of trust capital in LL? Methods and tools 
  • Ontological and epistemological foundations of Living Labs (Social constructionist/feminist/realist/positivist/hermeneutic interpretation of Living Labs) 

Contributing is easy

The research committee is inviting academic and practitioner submissions, as well as doctoral papers. It encourages submissions from academics, researchers, practitioners, private actors, NGO and public sector agencies, policy makers, students, and all those interested in co-creating innovation. If one of the authors is a PhD student, please indicate it on the track selection.  

You can choose between one of the 3 submission categories:

Format for submitting all papers

  • Follow the guidelines presented above according to your chosen paper category. 
  • All papers must be submitted in British English. 
  • Your paper must be submitted in .doc(x) format (Word document). 
  • Please make sure your paper is anonymous. Only include the author’s full name and affiliations on the cover page. 
  • Indicate if your submission has been previously published elsewhere. This is to ensure that we do not infringe upon another publisher’s copyright 
  • Include a 1-paragraph abstract that provides the key messages you will be presenting in the paper. 
  • Include 4-6 keywords relating to the theme or topics covered by the paper.
  • Provide a 2-3-paragraph conclusion that summarizes the article’s main points and leaves the reader with the most important messages. 
  • References should be made according to APA 6-style and included at the end of the paper in alphabetical order. 

Scientific Steering Committee

Submitted papers will be peer-reviewed by referees assigned by the Scientific Steering Committee (the Track Chairs) for acceptance or rejection. 

The Scientific Steering Committee is chaired by:  

Dimitri Schuurman, PhD Innovation Expert Methodology & Monitoring at imec, Living Lab expert within the ISPIM & ENoLL networks.  

Evaluators are chosen jointly by the Scientific Steering Committee and ENoLL Director. 

Priority will be given to qualified ENoLL members. Papers submitted will be evaluated on their appropriateness of theme for the conference, scientific quality, innovativeness, and the final recommendation of the Scientific Steering Committee. 

Authors submitting a paper are also invited to review papers.

What happens if your submission is accepted?

Accepted contributions will be presented during the Open Living Lab Days. Accepted contributions will be published in the Conference Proceedings of Open Living Lab Days 2023 with an ISBN number. By submitting your paper, you are hereby authorizing ENoLL to publish your paper in the Open Living Lab Days 2023 Conference Proceedings which will be part of the Research Track of Open Living Lab Days.   

Deadline for submitting your paper is 4 May 2023. 

Notification of acceptance will be sent by 9 June 2023.
